Price the activity, then the machine
A robot's advertised price answers a narrow question: what the seller charges for that package. Your budget has to answer a wider one: what it takes to do the activity you have in mind. Learning to program a desk robot, collecting training demonstrations and leaving a companion running at home require different equipment and time. Begin with that intended use and build a list around it.
Divide the budget into four groups: delivered hardware, equipment needed to begin, recurring services and a maintenance allowance. Keep a fifth column for your own time. You do not have to turn a hobby into an accounting exercise, but you should know whether the budget buys a usable setup. An incomplete bargain is still incomplete when the missing camera, power supply or software access becomes necessary.
Read the exact package and purchase stage
Pollen's Microduck page, checked September 6, 2026, advertises a $399 introductory preorder price before taxes and shipping. The listed base package includes the robot, battery, USB-C cable and controller. A charger pack and a development pack are additional choices. This is a useful illustration of how to read an offer: identify what starts the experience, then decide whether the extras solve a need you actually have.
For a preorder, also record the expected delivery information and the cancellation terms at the time you order. A price with an order button is not a confirmation that stock is ready to dispatch. Avoid scheduling a course, gift or paid project around an estimated date without a fallback. Save the edition and package description so you can later distinguish a changed offer from the one you considered.
Development access can change the comparison
Unitree's official G1 shop listing checked for this guide shows $13,500, a shipping range of $300 to $1,200 and a backorder notice. It also states that this product does not support secondary development, directing customization buyers to the EDU edition through sales. Taxes and import clearance are additional customer responsibilities according to the listing. The headline therefore cannot be treated as the price of an equivalent developer platform.
Apply that lesson at every budget level. Check access to the SDK, sensors, control interfaces and examples for the edition in your cart. An educational suffix may change more than included accessories. If you need to install your own policy or read a particular sensor, obtain a clear answer before paying. Record a requested quotation as unknown until you have it; filling the cell with a cheaper edition's price creates a misleading comparison.
Count the support equipment
Your setup may need a computer, storage, cables, a suitable power supply, tools and a place to mount cameras or secure a small arm. Some of these may already be on your desk. Count only what your project requires, but verify compatibility rather than assuming every cable with the right connector will work. Raspberry Pi's hardware documentation, for example, gives different power and peripheral limits for different models and supply arrangements.
For a printed robot, the bill of materials also includes fasteners, actuators, electronics and assembly consumables. LeRobot's SO-101 documentation links a parts list and distinguishes the leader and follower arrangements. That is the right level of detail for a budget. If you outsource printed pieces, include the service quote and delivery. If you print at home, allow material and machine time for fit samples and replacement attempts.
Keep service costs visible
Subscriptions and ownership offers need their own columns. The NEO order page lists a $499 monthly subscription and a separate $20,000 Early Access ownership offer, with a $200 refundable deposit advertised for ordering. These are different commercial arrangements. The deposit is not the full hardware price, and a monthly fee should not be compared with an ownership price without reading what each includes. Those figures describe the checked offer, not a prediction of future terms.
For smaller robots, inspect any paid conversation, remote access, storage or compute service you intend to use. Ask what remains available if you stop paying. As a purely illustrative calculation, a $25 optional service used for twelve months adds $300 to the first-year budget. Add it only when the service is part of your planned use. Do not assume an application is free forever because its current demo is free to try.
Write a budget you can update
A practical total is delivered package cost plus required extras plus twelve months of chosen services plus a realistic repair allowance. Keep exchange rates and tax treatment tied to an actual checkout or quotation. For example, an invented $400 robot with $60 delivery, $90 of required equipment and a $50 reserve starts at $600 before any applicable tax. Label examples as examples so they never drift into product-price claims.
Finally, reserve time for setup and maintenance. Check the first calibration procedure and the route for obtaining a replacement part. Compare candidates at the point where each can perform your intended activity. The most useful budget is one you can explain, revise and afford without relying on promised future capabilities or an assumed resale value.
